I hate Independence Day

I was recently forced at gunpoint (no really) to watch Independence Day by my brother whom hates the movie with a vengeance, I had taken his word for the last few years for not watching it but he forced me to watch it stating that I have to hate it as well, he was right I did hate it to the point my brain begun to hurt, (more than it did after I saw Pearl Harbor).

The plot basically is that on July 2, a mammoth alien mothership enters orbit around Earth and deploys several dozen saucer-shaped "destroyer" spacecraft, each 15 miles in width. As the destroyers take positions over most of Earth's major cities.

David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum), an underachieving MIT-graduate working for a cable company in New York City, discovers hidden satellite transmissions which he believes to be a timer counting down to a coordinated attack by the aliens. After he contacts his ex-wife whom works in the White House he manages to pick up her signal by triangulating the transmission.

So putting aside the fact that he triangulates the signal using one radio device (which takes the whole point out of the term "triangulate") he makes contact and some guys in helicopters go up in front of the destroyer only to be shot down, instantly the destroyers open up a massive attack on the east coast, Air Force One escapes Washington being chases by a massive fireball as the city goes up, at pretty much the same time New York City is also destroyed its wreckage shown, with the Twin Towers as the only building standing. so they are tough

I'm not making this as a mistake since the movie was made five years before 9/11 just pointing it out.

The next day the US leads a rather retarded counter attack which involves a squadron of Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornets the Black Knights from California attempting to destroy the destroyer stationed above Los Angeles, so instead of using heavy bombs from B-52's they use fighters to attack destroyers, right, using standard sidewinders on a massive alien ships that's about 15km in size it results in the deflector shield thingy's being destroyed and the destroyer launching its own fighters, Will Smith's charactor ends up the sole survivor ejecting in the Nevada Desert where he comes across a convoy of RV's, (with some charactors we know from earlier in the movie one whom states he was kidnapped by the aliens years ago).

Over Houston the order is given to attack the destroyer their, a B-2 Spirit launches nukes at it but fails to destroy its shield (yes launching nukes above a US city!).

At Area 51 all of our main charactors join together where it is revealed there is a captured fighter that was found at Roswell back in 1947, (the US government lied?)
Levinson devises a plan to use the captured attacker to gain access to the interior of the alien mothership in space in order to introduce a computer virus and plant a nuclear missile on board. This, it is hoped, will cause the shields of the Earth-based alien craft to fail long enough for the human resistance to eliminate them.

stupid plan

He is joined by Will Smiths charactor whom pilots the craft, as around the world air forces gather together to eliminate the destroyers, at Area 51 they are short on pilots and a red neck states that he wants to go back up for revenge to which his captain half laughs at him, (which I suppose was supposed to make the audience sad and hate the captain and feel sorry for the red neck guy).

Jeff Goldblum's charactor and Will Smith's charactor reach the mothership preparing to upload the computer virus to infect the alien mothership and then shut down the destroyers shields so that the human resistance can shoot down the 15 destroyers on Earth.

So pretty much the same plan they tried before is used again, on the 4th July around the world air forces gather together their fighters to hit the destroyers, the red neck guy is seen pilotting an F-18 (because red necks can fly fighter jets easily enough) in the middle of the battle and flying into the destroyers laser beam committing suicide to destroy the destroyer which is supposed to make us sad.

Yes a computer virus to the alien mothership using an iMac, where is the logic in that???

As all the other destroyers are destroyed and the world is free to declare its independence day July 4th becomes known as world independence day or something like that, it's then stated that Smith and Goldblums charactors have not yet returned, oh no not another two people, everybody seems silent shortly after the mothership had been destroyed by the nuke.

As the audience held their breath obviously believing both charactors are dead they then return to the relief of us all crash landing back in the Nevada desert, and there is a happy ending as they watch the debris from the mothership enter the atmosphere like shooting stars, yep millions of people get killed and there is a happy ending very shortly later like I Am Legend.

Haha i had to laugh at the redneck parts. I guess its all very illogical, and a looong movie, but I liked it. Just because of the action. And the nukings.

Last time I checked, this movie was fictional. You don't have to like it, but find something better to dowith your time rather than sit and bash a movie you knew you would hate. You wasted your time watching this movie, stop bitching about it.

We mock what we don't understand (or refuse to).

Your reasons to hate this movie seem te be even more shallow than the movie was.

It always amazes me how much more energy people put into bashing things they simply don't like (and aren't obligated to do so), than in talking or writing about things they actually did like (I guess I'm doing it myself now too).

ID4 is simply a movie for people that want to be entertained by big special effects, easy plot devices and almost over the top action; movies that score big at the MTV movie awards. Having only read this post, I'm guessing you enjoy movies that win at the Academy Awards more.

    Just my 2 cents...

Nice post. I have to agree with how insane some of the ideas and concepts the story held, but the "rednecks" as you call them were supposed to be vietnam vets. They did have jets back then. Assuming they could get them off the ground the flying would be natural to a pilot.

This is my first blog post .. EVER. But I just had to. I googled "people who hate the movie 'Independence Day'" because we recently got into a conversation at work about this. I was the only person in the room who did not like the movie.

Look, I understand it's fiction, I understand it's a movie, I understand we should suspend our imaginations and just try to enjoy the cinema experience, but I paid money to see a movie and I want to enjoy it.

Do I think Independence Day was the worst movie ever? no. But, it COULD HAVE been the best Sci Fi movie for our generation.

Instead, it was full of Hollywood-isms. A cocky Will Smith who punches out aliens and makes jokes even after leaving his fine ass stripper girlfriend who he thought he'd never see again. Or joking while flying the alien's ship while going off to save the world.

Like Aliens .. the second one .. that's what I would call a good science fiction movie (something like that). ID4 just insults your intelligence.

    Agreed last Anon

Aliens was a brilliant movie and had a great final standoff when Ripley uses the exosuit dock-loader to take on the Queen alien.

while Independence Day finished off with a PRODUCT PLACEMENT for an iMac of all things!
